FEBRUARY 2012
FROM THE PASTOR
Sunday, February 5: A hero is someone you want to be like. If Jesus were your hero, how would your life be different? In I Cor. 9:16-27 Paul seeks to be like Christ as he does all he can to serve others. Jesus shuned popularity in Mk. 1:29-39. Do we serve just to get people to like us? We may never know how an act of love will affect another but Isa. 40:21-31 tells us that God’s ways are beyond our understanding.
Sunday, February 12: I Cor. 10:19-11:1 calls upon us to do all things to God’s glory yet when we serve we are often not appreciated. How we respond tells much about who’s glory we really seek. In Mk. 1:40-45 Jesus heals those who cannot give him anything and who go out and disobey him. He glorified the Father through his humble suffering. In II Kings 5:1-14 Naaman tries to buy healing or thinks he must do some mighty act. If God heals him then, Naaman gets the glory. How do we try to take some of god’s glory?
Sunday, February 19: “How Is Your Vision?” II Cor.3:12-4:6 says that only when we can see the invisible kingdom is our eyesight good. In II Kings 2:1-12 Elisha sees where the true strength of nations is found. In Mk. 9:2-9 Jesus grants his disciples a vision of his true nature so they will not be afraid of what they are about to see in the visible events around them.
Sunday, February 26: “Tempted or Tested?” That is the question and the answer is “Yes!” We learn in James 1:12-18 that God does not temp us to sin but every temptation is an invitation to trust Him. In Mk. 1:9-15 Jesus himself is tempted and turns to God’s Word for power. In Gen. 22:1-18 Abraham is tested & called to sacrifice his son. God provided a way out of sin as Abraham was faithful.
LENT THROUGH THE TEACHING OF THE CATECHISM - This Lenten season we will focus on the basic teachings of the faith in the Catechism and discover how the sacrifice, death, and resurrection of Jesus, ties together all we confess and believe. Services begin Wednesday, February 22 at 7:30 with Ash Wednesday and the imposition of the ashes. Bring your catechism and explore it anew.

UNANIMOUS SUPREME COURT DECISION - SUPPORTS HOSANNA-TABOR
(From Reporter Online)
The United States Supreme Court January 11 issued an historic 9-0 decision in favor of a Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod church and school in Redford, Mich. The decision marks the first time the Supreme Court has ruled that federal discrimination laws do not apply to employees of religious organizations who
perform "ministerial" duties, including teaching religion.
In the case, Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, et al., a former commissioned minister (teacher) at the now-closed Hosanna-Tabor school sued the school after she was dismissed in 2005 for "insubordination and disruptive conduct in violation of church teaching," according to Hosanna-Tabor's Petition for Certiorari.
Ron Schultz, the Synod's chief administrative officer, said, "We are very pleased with today's Supreme Court opinion in Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC and its affirmation of the ministerial exception under the religion clauses of the First Amendment.”
"The unanimous opinion by the Court," Schultz said, "presents a clear message that religious institutions are protected when making decisions that affect the faith and mission of the church."
